GreenFor will then be expected to both set up and continue to maintain a Combat Outpost as far out from their FOB as possible somewhere along a bearing between 90 and 180 and outside of the gorge area of the field.

Tan Force will enter the field 15 minutes after GreenFor and despite risk of ambush, will attempt to set up their own FOB in a defensible position somewhere to the East and South of parallels 74400 and 40000 respectively.
TanFor will also be expected to maintain a Combat Outpost as far out from their FOB as possible somewhere along a bearing of 0-90 degrees of their FOB. They must remain outside of and (behind cover of) all points in the red crosshatched region at all times for reasons of threat of live fire/shrapnel/lead hazard.

NB: Military Sites are not to be located in civilian areas (that means not in the village or pipeline areas, gentlemen.)

Both sides will need to maintain effective and continuous patrolling campaigns to gain greatest control and awareness of activities throughout the territories.

Both sides are expected to determine a strategic and effective balance of both defensive staffing of FOB’s and CP’s alongside their steady offensive/dynamic defense maintained through Patrolling forces. [Switching forces out steadily has been found to be very effective in maintaining good team energy and individual morale.]

*On the hour, on channel 1, both sides will submit complete SALUTE reports of all items of interest. Temporary armistice is observed during these 5-7 minutes after the hour.

The focus of this operation will be on quality communication and execution of strategy and tactics. After all, that’s how teams succeed at LZ-5.

SITUATION:

Continued fighting north of the Village, which was attacked yesterday by enemy armor division. Missile Defense System Encrypted Control code – MIDSEC – is scheduled for random re-coding on Sunday 03FEB11. *** MIDSEC VULNERABLE DURING THIS PERIOD. *** All units on active duty are on full alert until further notice.

Recent weather has filled reservoirs with potable water, yet road conditions are worse. Canyon to the South is a De-militarized zone (NO ENTRY).

MISSION:

Quickly establish defensive positions in AO at Village and Pipeline.

Plan operations from FOB (location is decision of Command) in the field.

Search for isolated friendly and enemy units in AO.

Observe, record and report enemy activity to higher command.

EXECUTION:

0900 Deploy command and combat teams into AO

Establish FOB and communications, secure access to reservoir, clear roads of debris, inventory civilian fuel available for operations. Analyze vulnerabilities and plan operations to secure Pipeline, MIDSEC unit, and Village.

Deploy small units to patrol for isolated friendly and enemy units in the AO. (From recent armored assault on the village).

Deploy team to recon enemy activity and send regular reports up the chain of command.

LOGISTICS:

Standard Medic Rules in Effect - LEARN THEM

Standard Limited Ammo Rules in Effect - MAX 4 MAGAZINES – NO Hi-Caps. YOU MAY NOT CARRY SPARE AMMO OR LOADERS ON YOUR PERSON. These will be at your resupply locations.

Vehicle Support: TBA

Arrive at gate, sign in and pay. Proceed immediately to parking lot and get personal gear ready. YOUR TEAM MAY BE BRIEFING IN THE FIELD. YOU NEED TO CHRONO AT THE FIELD GATE ASAP!

Be prepared for Safety and Scenario briefing at 1000h. You will be briefed by your Command for operations after 1030.

RECON GAMES:

Recon/Training Exercises bring players of both sides to the next level of leadership and teamwork. It may be a rare opportunity for you to apply military-style operational planning as a participant in a Milsim game in Northern California.

There is no predetermined script or scenario – other than this:

Both sides are military organizations, with Rules of Engagement

Neither side starts the game with information about the enemy, or with any stability of control on their side of the field

There is a DMZ that must not be crossed until authorized.

Both sides are issued equipment (props), to use for establishing their position on the field, during the ‘recon portion’ of the game

Both sides take the opportunity to recon the activity of the enemy during this time. All intelligence is recorded and passed to their command.

Both sides are led by players – your command is a player just like you – and rely on the intel gathered during the recon portion of the game to develop a strategy and mission for their operation.

It is very important for players to take the reconnaissance portion of these games seriously – this is not a speedball game in any way. Failure to establish a strong, strategically sound position on the field, failure to gather accurate intel and communicate it to the command, and failure to plan and manage your operation results in a serious loss – and not much fun.

Consider the R/TX series as your opportunity to participate to the highest standard of MILSIM available in the area.

AAR

Orders:

Terminate the command of Alfonso Ramos during his visit to the region. Disable their communications capability. Disable anti-aircraft capability.

Interpretation and Execution of orders:

With considerable enemy presence in the area, including highly-trained units such as Bushido, TanFor command concluded aggressive action was necessary; small skirmishes would lead to dilution of our forces and failure.

Operation was planned into 3 Phases – Direct Action to disable communications and anti-aircraft weapon; withdrawal into canyon to establish FOB and ammunition resupply, recon by force to confirm route and time of Ramos’s visit; final phase of establishing ambush on Ramos’s convoy.

Order of Battle:

Phase I: Two units formed 5 teams: Support on E road, Support on S of comms facility, Assault on W side, Breach and capture intel from W side, and Demo to AA.

Unexpected enemy security was evaded to establish ORP. These soldiers were less trained and should have been by-passed on the way to the OBJ. The mistake was to allocate resources to neutralize them; this delayed our assault and drew attention to us two minutes before we could fire on defensive targets at our OBJ. Consideration of enemy disposition should be regarded when making plans.

No ‘medic plan’ was established: both units did not establish CCP and did not coordinate to maintain effectiveness of medics.

TF-75 unit successfully retrieved several blade server drives and eventually returned to Patrol Base.

Phoenix Company individual attached to TF-75 was able to quickly pass through cattle to the AA missile launcher and drop a grenade into the barrel, however the grenade failed to detonate. His actions seemed to confuse the enemy and it they were not aware the AA was still operational (if the barrel would be emptied).

Both units suffered heavy casualties: 80% KIA.

Phase II: All operators regrouped at Patrol Base in canyon to re-load, and to repair one weapon. Task force moved E to establish an FOB, communications relay and resupply location at the fork in the rivers at grid 74483970

3 units formed; strategy was to move to contact – unit to make contact would establish base of fire, other two units would flank immediately. Wound all enemy present – we would have 5 minutes to accomplish this in each contact. Treat the wounded, interrogate them. Then move on.

Within minutes of moving out from the FOB, forward team made contact. The 3 units were separated and did not regroup until much later.

A prisoner was taken by SPEAR Group. The time and location of Ramos’s visit (village at 3pm) was discovered. SPEAR Group rendezvoused with one of the other 2 units near the airfield, and moved out toward the village. Third unit had already moved E and N to the village independently.

There was no radio contact between the 3 units – which presented a significant problem as the small ‘strike team sized-’ units were ineffective in controlling the area. Operators using unique radios need to become familiar enough with their use to remain effective.

Phase III: Time was limited; the ‘ambush’ would have to become a ‘raid’.

SPEAR and TF-75 unit engaged the enemy en route to the ambush point.

The TF-75 unit moved too far away to be within effective firing range so the SPEAR unit was unsupported. It was not clear what the intentions of the TF-75 unit were; SPEAR left the engagement (disregarded capturing prisoners or eliminating all threats) to stay closer to the TF75 unit and assault the village.

Upon approach to village, SPEAR was unsupported by TF75 and took casualties SW of the lake. Effective fire and maneuver caused the enemy SAW to withdraw, and the SPEAR wounded were treated. Assault shifted E to get closer to TF75.

Enemy force – remainder from the previous engagement – counter-attacked from the W and eliminated SPEAR Group. Time was out; however to ‘keep things going’ the OPCOM (SCA staff) opted to forestall the ‘game over’ call.

The missing TF75 unit was heard calling out ‘CCP’ to the E of the village in the tree-line. All TanFor dead migrated there to find an operational CCP with solid defense. Six dead waited with the medic, who continued to defend himself, thus re-starting the ‘respawn clock’. Eventually the flanking enemy was taken out and respawn for (now) seven operators was complete.

All three TanFor units pushed from the E into the village, successfully breaching the interior from the N, and clearing the W side. Enemy respawn and ammunitions resupply were taken; Ramos was killed. (This all occurred after the time limit).

Conclusions for TanFor (USJTF and associated forces):

Thorough understanding of the leader’s intent for TanFor (as stated by the game admin/planner) and thorough application of SMEALCS / OPORD process enabled pre-game planning and organization that maintained TanFor unit cohesion. All operators were briefed on the execution, units and chain of command were clarified, roles and areas of responsibilities were defined, and steps for completion were confirmed. This was one of the more solid and effective operations conducted by combined teams that I’ve been involved with. (previously, TF75 and SPEAR Group had always been opposing forces).

Radio and personal equipment failures: Puxing radios, Motorola GP68 radios and other non- ‘blister pack’ GMRS radios are great, but are more complicated to operate. Any individual using one needs to become competent with setting sub-channels, etc., WELL BEFORE game day. There is not enough time during the briefing to sort these things out.
Weapons malfunctions happen; lessons learned must be applied to prevent similar issues from happening in the future. (One mistake was to give 2 out of 4 Thunder B to the Demo unit – however the newest grenade was not given, potentially resulting in the demolition failure.)

Unit Cohesion: Three objectives and larger groups demands working together. Commitment to killing the same enemy is inadequate ‘collaboration’ to accomplish the mission. MILSIM players really need to understand how to work effectively as a whole; how their contribution to a strategy, tactic and battle drill is so important and is ultimately more satisfying. TanFor’s unit cohesion slipped as the day went on, yet we got it together at the end of the day – and that’s how we took a respawn and ammunition resupply after half the force was ‘dead’. Training in battle drills, and experience with practical exercises is the best way to learn and understand these things.

The ‘Point’ of our games: We use ‘objectives’ as a means to apply our skills and test our capabilities. As in this operation, TanFor can say they successfully accomplished 1/3 of its objectives – failing in its priority of terminating Ramos. However, TanFor can also say that is accomplished a greater objective of bringing together players from different teams to work really well together. Guys who were not totally familiar with each other followed commands, guys rushed through fire to tie bandages around people on a different ‘team’, people found magazines and handed them to others to keep them firing for cover.
All of our ‘successes’ and ‘failures’ are great – because we can learn from them to improve our skills. And, skills is what makes MILSIM what it is.

SITUATION

Bogotá, Colombia, June 2012: The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army or FARC has just recently released the last 10 of its political hostages to the Colombian Government Forces. There are also rumors of peace talks and a possible ceasefire circulating in the country. One of the FARC leaders though is not willing to give up so easily.

Commander Alfonso Ramos had made a deal for military grade weapons with the mysterious “Talal Hassan Ghantou” before he was arrested by the Colombian Government for weapons smuggling. He has established a base camp high in the mountains in the Southeast of the country, near an area labeled LZ-5 by US Forces in the region.

In order to help force an end to the 48 year long conflict, the Colombian government has ordered a military operation to eliminate Ramos and his base camp. The US military has sent special operations forces to aid in the mission.

Yes, at times operations at LZ-5 include fire support: mortar, artillery or air strike. Knowing how to properly call in a target is essential – at the least you will be ignored by fire control, at the worst you will end up with friendly fire incidents.

The LZ-5 MAP is based on the UTM, a worldwide standard creating a square X,Y coordinate system. Regardless of the field map grid, the system used to pinpoint a location within a grid square can follow the same approach.

HOW TO PINPOINT A LOCATION ON CURRENT LZ-5 MAP

Our grid system uses 2 axis coordinates, like any. BUT, the current map has a letter at the bottom, numbers along the Y axis.

When reading any map, or coordinate, the horizontal (bottom) integer is named first, then the vertical (side). So you’ve probably heard ‘G13′ at our field, for example.

Often, a fire mission at our field puts friendly forces at risk – because the grid is ‘course’ and anyone in it might get killed. Players need a way to reduce the margin of error that our large grid has and get a more exact location for danger close fire missions.

How to do that?

1. Divide the grid as in UTM coordinates.
A. locate the grid
B. imagine splitting the grid in half on both axes – making 4 squares.
C. the middle line will represent a number ’5′. For example grid reference G13 right in the center would then be G05,135 read ‘Golf zero five, one three five’.
D. Right in the center of the top, right quadrant (or corner) of the same grid would be G07,137 -or-G08,138. Precisely, G0751375.

So, this style can be SUPER ACCURATE if you just keep dividing the interval between ‘imagined lines’ splitting the grids into another layer of 10 x 10 grids.
This tool is used to line up on standardized UTM grids to help divide them up more accurately, instead of just visualizing.

2. Distance from KNOWN REFERENCE POINT – the TRP
To be a ‘known reference point’, it must be marked on the map, or have been PREVIOUSLY CONFIRMED WITH COMMAND – usually Craig. That would mean the two of you marked it and NAMED it on the maps yourselves in person before the game.
Note the exact location of the target, then note the X and Y distance from the Target Reference Point. This means if the target is 50 meters SW of the TRP, you might say “Target Reference Alpha, Right 30 meters, Down 40 meters”.
Always – X axis first, Y axis second…

3. Temporary Reference

Use smoke, beacon, or signal panel – better confirm your color. Once again, you can place a panel, park a vehicle, etc., then also give exact distance from this temporary reference. For example “Target – on Blaze Orange Signal Panel” or “Target Reference – Blue Smoke – Left 200 feet, Up 30 feet”.

By the way, you might notice to do any of this you’ll need map or at least a compass (only for TRP or a Temporary Reference).
